Educational Objectives
- To enable ENS students to earn an enhanced bachelor’s degree in ancient, medieval, and modern history (University of Paris 1) and contemporary history (ENS Paris-Saclay).
- To prepare students for the Research Master’s in Political History of the Contemporary World, which can lead to preparation for the agrégation in history or for civil service entrance exams. Upon completion of this bachelor’s degree, students may also choose to pursue a Master’s 1 in a historical period other than contemporary history.
The academic environment
- The program is taught by the faculty in history and other disciplines (sociology and economics) within the DER SHS.
- Two affiliated research laboratories: the Institute of Political Social Sciences (ISP), which combines sociology, history, and political science; and the Laboratory for Institutions and Historical Dynamics of the Economy and Society (IDHES), which develops a multidisciplinary approach to economic activities, the institutions that structure them, and the historical context in which they operate.
"Major" and "Minor" Courses
As part of the first year in the SHS program, each student must complete a third-year (L3) program (60 ECTS) in a discipline chosen as a “major,” and a complementary program in another discipline chosen as a “minor” (20 ECTS). As part of the Bachelor’s degree in History (major), students choose a complementary program (minor) from among the following two disciplines: economics and sociology.
